We recognize that adolescence is a challenging time for both young people and their families. This period of rapid physical, emotional, and social development benefits from a specialized approach—one that combines family-centered care with the advances of modern medicine. At The Village Doctor in San Francisco Bay Area, our adolescent medicine services are designed with this philosophy at heart, ensuring that every young patient feels seen, heard, and understood as they navigate these formative years.

What is Adolescent Medicine?

Adolescent medicine focuses on addressing the unique challenges that arise during this transitional period. Our approach goes beyond simply treating medical conditions; we aim to support the overall well-being of our teen patients, and their families, encompassing their physical, emotional, and mental health needs. Our pediatricians are here to guide your teen, and you, through everything from routine check-ups to more complex health issues that may emerge as they grow and mature.

Why Choose The Village Doctor for Adolescent Medicine?

At The Village Doctor, we pride ourselves on taking care of the whole family, and the benefits that come from this model: when an issue arises for one family member, it affects everyone so we make sure it informs the care of your entire family.

Our concierge approach ensures that your teen receives the personalized attention they deserve without the rush often associated with larger practices. Our adolescent medicine services are tailored to meet the specific needs of young adults, offering a safe and supportive environment where they can feel comfortable discussing their concerns.

Our pediatricians are primary care doctors for teens, and are well-versed in the intricacies of adolescent health. Whether your child is dealing with the common challenges of puberty, managing a chronic condition, or simply needing someone to talk to about the stress of growing up, we are here to help. We offer services in adolescent health, ranging from routine physicals and vaccinations to more specialized care, including puberty, mental health support, and nutritional guidance.

What our patients say

Adolescent Medicine FAQs

The age of adolescence is generally considered to begin at the onset of puberty, ending in the late teen years. However our pediatricians prefer to care for their patients through college, at which point they’re able to more easily transition to an internal medicine doctor.

Once your teen, or family, joins The Village Doctor, making an appointment is as simple as picking up the phone and giving us a call. Due to our limited practice size, appointments are scheduled promptly, including same day, if desired.

Primary Care providers have completed training in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, or Family Medicine, and enjoy taking care of the whole patient and often the whole family. Specialty services are generally provided by “specialists” who have undergone training beyond that of Pediatric or Internal Medicine residencies (typically 3 years), or have finished formal residencies in specialty fields such as Orthopedics, General Surgery, Neurology or Dermatology. Specialty training may also be provided as a Fellowship which can be as little as one year (Sports or Sleep Medicine) up to 3 years (Pediatric Cardiology or Neurology).

You can encourage your teen to be open and honest with their pediatrician about how they’re feeling so there are no secrets. They will then get the greatest benefit from their doctor’s experience and care.

Depending on the age and maturity of your teen, you may task them with the responsibility of scheduling their own appointments.

In appointments, and depending on your teen’s age, our pediatricians balance confidentiality around sensitive topics, with their commitment to helping your teen involve you when serious issues arise.

Note that in California, teens aged 12 and over can request confidentiality around certain topics including sexual health, contraception, pregnancy, and substance abuse. And once your teen has reached the age of legal maturity, 18 or older, they will be asked to complete a form indicating their permission to include anyone else, even you, in discussions about their health and wellbeing.
