The Village Doctor Newsletter – Week of December 13, 2022

Friends,

With Thanksgiving behind us, and the Holidays just around the corner, there is much for me to be thankful for, and much to share here with you.

First, and with a heavy heart, I must share that my medical assistant, the wonderful Kimmie Butler, has taken advantage of an opportunity with more upward mobility, and has moved on after five wonderful years at The Village Doctor. I, and the rest of #TeamTVD, will miss her greatly, but I support her ambition and choice, and we all wish her very, very well in her new position. While we search for a new medical assistant, Jonalyn and Jennifer will capably support Dr. McColl and me as we continue to care for all of you during the holidays.

Lastly, although it is now December, I want to share a couple of fun photos from my “Movember” adventure(s), and ask that you consider supporting me again this year in raising money for the Movember Foundation and their work in supporting men’s health around the world! Please click here if you are so inclined!

In gratitude,

Eric

MINDFULNESS FOR PARENTS

Mindfulness, or the intentional practice of bringing one’s attention to the present-moment experience without judgment, has become a buzzword lately after the popularization by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, and it can be helpful for your parenting.

As I type this, there is snow falling in the mountains, which reminds me of two things. The first is it is never too late to get in to the gym, or back on the bike, to get your legs and core “ski season ready” and strong, truly the best way to avoid injury this coming ski season.  Here is a nice piece from Outside magazine to get you going. The second piece of advice is avoiding that “last run” when you know you should instead call it a day. Listen to your body and avoid pushing too hard. Many of the injuries we see occur late in the day (or truly on that last run) when fatigue sets in. Let your ego go and have a nice hot chocolate instead.

And speaking of pushing hard (but not too hard), I’d like to give a closing shout out to TVD’s friend, Erik Arvidsson, who we featured on our Instagram last year when he led the Americans and finished 8th in Austria.  This past weekend Erik opened his season with the US Ski Team at the Xfinity Birds of Prey World Cup Downhill and Super G races in Beaver Creek, Colorado. Wow. I’ll have to ask Erik about his tricks for staying strong and avoiding injury, I bet we could all learn a thing or two…

In a different note, as some of you may know, my wife, Dany Kelly, runs a digital marketing company called Norther, focusing on the national parks as well as mindful, ethical, sustainable and luxurious travel in the Northern Territory of Australia.
This Holiday Season Dany and Norther have put together a fun way for kids to get ready for Santa this year! They’ve developed the “12 Days of Australian Christmas” and will be publishing free, downloadable coloring pages from the 14th – 25th December featuring different native animals in Australia. Dany has worked hard to develop this fantastic business and I encourage you to sign up here if you love Australian animals or have kids who would like to follow Santa’s journey through northern Australia … Merry Christmas!

Again, TVD Newsletter is a labor of love. If you enjoy reading this, please share widely! Was this forwarded to you by a friend? Please subscribe here.
