“Prevention” is the theme this month, with two topics to bring to your attention. The first is your Flu Shot. Simply said, get one! The second revolves around football, facial hair, and Men’s Health.
Four years ago both of my boys played football at Sacred Heart Prep and we were having quite a season. What started with “no shave November” turned into a mustache challenge: make the finals, and I’ll shave and craft a stylish handlebar mustache! Did I mention that I was the team doctor? So I give myself way too much credit, but the next challenge had to do with getting to the championships, and as they say, the rest is history (and historically awful facial hair!) SHP went undefeated and were Open Division champions, and I kicked off my “Movember” Men’s Health fundraising career.
A Hairy Tale – The History of Movember’s Early Years. My red Gator ’stache has its roots in 2003 Melbourne, Australia, where two mates in a pub (typical Aussie story) decided to try and bring the moustache back into fashion, all in the name of men’s health and prostate cancer. They got 30 men to grow moustaches, as well as enthusiasm, and the following year the “Mo Bros” chose the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) as their non-profit partner. By 2006 the four original co-founders established an official Australian charity, the Movember Foundation, and the movement to “change the face of men’s health” began. The rest is, as they say, history. Click here to read more.
