Once again, I am struck by the (rapid) passage of time. August? Really? At the end of this month, Dr. Maia Mossé will have been with The Village Doctor for a full year. And Dr. Milt McColl for two years. And, “wow”, Christie Warner, a full TEN years. Time does indeed fly, especially when you’re having fun… I am so appreciative of #TeamTVD. (Enjoy more of #TeamTVD on our Instagram page!). Thank you to all of them, and equally to all of you who make The Village Doctor possible. 🙏

Katie Ledecky, Stanford, ~2020
Katie has more gold medals (swimming) than The Village Doctor has doctors (!). This week in Paris brought her total Olympic medal count to 14, including nine gold medals, making her the most decorated female U.S. Olympic swimmer in history. AND she played in the Band. My hero. 😉

Pediatrician Guide For Parents in Digital Age
As a pediatrician, I see firsthand the impact that technology and the internet can have on children of all ages. The internet can be a wonderful tool for children, providing access to a wealth of information and opportunities for learning and creativity. However, it also comes with its fair share of dangers, from cyberbullying to inappropriate content to online predators. It is crucial for parents to take an active role in monitoring their children’s online activity and teaching them how to navigate the internet safely.
Here are some tips for parents to help ensure their children’s safety while online:
IMMUNIZATION AWARENESS MONTH
One of the most critical aspects of my role as a primary care physician is to educate and advocate for proactive and preventive care to maximize healthspan. Immunizations are a cornerstone of this. August, recognized as Immunization Awareness Month, provides an excellent opportunity to highlight the importance of vaccines in protecting not only individual health but also public health.
BREATH OF FRESH FITNESS: IMPROVING MORTALITY AND UNLOCKING YOUR POTENTIAL WITH VO2 MAX TESTING
VO2 max testing involves exercising on a treadmill or stationary bike while your oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production among other biometric data are measured, reflecting your aerobic capacity and cardiovascular fitness. Several studies show higher risk of not only death from heart problems, but also all-cause mortality in people with lower fitness levels as measured by VO2 max testing (Kunutsor et al., 2017, Grazzi et al., 2014, Chiaranda et al., 2019).
OK, It is that time of year again!
I’m pleased to give a shout out to the Kings Mountain Art Fair, 2024. The Fair showcases juried original art by over 125+ independent artists and 15 Kings Mountain artists. The Fair is in-person and online! You can visit with the artists at the Fair or shop their websites for extraordinary art. Join this experience by visiting Labor Day Weekend (August 31, September 1 & 2 (Saturday, Sunday & Monday)) The Fair is open, 10 am – 5 pm, PDT.
If you are unable to shop, please consider making a donation to support our Kings Mountain Volunteer Fire. Brigade. The Fair’s proceeds support this important community resource which protects all of us in Woodside and on the Peninsula from wildfires and assists in medical aid and rescue. Our Fair is run 100% by volunteers who work hard to support the Fair and KM Fire Department.
You can also learn more from this VIDEO from last year’s fair. Fun!
Lastly, I wanted to give a shout out to Katie Seedman and her team at Heritage Bank of Commerce, who have been our banking partners for years. Katie, in particular, has been a fabulous advocate of TVD, and we will miss her dearly. Happy Retirement, Katie (and enjoy your new granddaughter!
