The Village Doctor Newsletter – Week of February 6, 2023

Happy New Year, and how did it get to be February already (or simply 2023 for that matter)? Another The Village Doctor year which is simply flying by.

Speaking of speed, this month’s TVD Newsletter focuses on going fast, going hard, and not getting hurt. We’re fortunate to have three contributions by world-class experts in the field of Sports Medicine (Sports Medicine is a branch of medicine concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of injuries related to physical activity and sports.)

Although I am excited to introduce everyone below, I have a special place in my heart for Erik Arvidsson. I have known Erik, and his family, since he was just a toddler, and have enjoyed watching him sacrifice a lot, train hard, and now live his dream as part of the US SKi Team “speed team”. Wow. Many of you know that I have connections to the Tirol in Austria, home of the world famous downhill race, the Hahnenkamm. Imagine my excitement a couple of weeks ago when Erik raced (and did well!) down the treacherous “Streif” in Kitzbuhel! As part of the celebration of all of this, The Village Doctor is proud to be one of Erik’s sponsors this race season.  Have a close look at Erik’s helmet (don’t blink, he is going by at nearly 70 mph!).

I am also excited to introduce you to our other two contributors. Dr. Jeff Lazarus has written for us before. He is a seasoned physician with interest and expertise in medical hypnosis, or medical (or “positive”) visualization. Dr. Lazarus tells me, “I want athletes to have fun playing their sport and excel at their play.  No matter what the sport—tennis, golf, hockey, soccer, wrestling, football, swimming, fencing, or horseback riding—I can teach athletes to teach themselves how to decrease their stress, stay focused, and play even more confidently.”

And speaking of playing confidently, I am also excited to introduce you to TVD’s own Dr. Milt McColl. Many of you have now met Milt, and found him to be, as I have, a very kind, caring, and knowledgeable physician. But what you may not appreciate is that he has years of “sports medicine” experience most of us can get only by watching Monday Night Football. Please read below as Dr. McColl reflects on his years as a professional athlete, earning not one, but two Super Bowl rings with our beloved SF 49ers.

Did I say it already? Wow.

Eric Weiss, MD, February 2, 2023

WHAT IS THE ADVANTAGE OF HAVING A DOCTOR WHO IS A FORMER PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE AS MY PRIMARY CARE PROVIDER?

Being one himself, Dr. McColl shares his views on how a physician who is also a former professional athlete can very much relate to the issues facing every athlete from the twelve-year-old little league pitcher to the high school football to the college professional athlete.
